Places to Visit from Newton Lodge

Maryck Memories of Childhood Museum - 15 minute walk

This fascinating exhibition displays a collection of dolls, doll’s houses, toys, bears etc. dating back over a hundred years. There is also a small tea room and craft shop.

Kerrachar Gardens - 5 minute drive to the departure point

Boat trips can be taken from Kylesku Pier to Kerrachar Gardens, a new loch-side garden which is only accessible by boat. Boat departs from the slipway at Kylesku, a few minutes drive from Newton Lodge, at 13.00 hours, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The boat fare is £10.00 and entrance to the gardens is £2.50. The gardens are open from mid May to mid September.


Eas a’Chual Aluinn - 5 minute drive to departure point

Boat trips up Glencoul to see Eas a’Chual Aluinn, which at 650 feet is the highest waterfall in Britain. Cruises depart twice daily, morning and afternoon, from the slipway at Kylesku, a few minutes drive from Newton Lodge. A seal colony and nesting terns are viewed on route.

Ardvreck Castle - 15 minute drive

The ruins of this castle lie on a small peninsula on picturesque Loch Assynt and are only 15 minutes drive from Kylesku Lodges.

Highland Stoneware - 20minutes to Lochinver

Highland Stoneware at Lochinver and Ullapool are working potteries making unusual and distinctive pieces. Visitors are free to browse as potters work on their wheels. All items are hand crafted and painted and make great souvenirs or gifts.

Handa Island - 35 minute drive to Departure Point

The nature reserve of Handa  is one of the largest seabird colonies in N.W. Europe.  Handa, an offshore island with sea cliffs , can be reached by boat from the pier at Tarbet.  

 

Falls of Shin - 45 minute drive

The falls are a popular tourist destination. In the summer months it is possible to watch the salmon leaping up the falls on their journey to the breeding grounds in the quiet pools upstream. There is also a visitors centre with restaurant and woodland walks with well marked trails.

Ullapool - 45 minute drive

Ullapool is the gateway to North-West Sutherland, and is also the main ferry terminal for Stornoway and the Western Isles. Situated on the shores of Loch Broom, the village is a popular holiday destination with a leisure centre, swimming pool, golf course, Highland Stoneware, Tourist Shops, Restaurants and a superb museum.

Balnakeil Craft Village - 50 minute drive

The craft village, near Durness, has been established in the once derelict buildings of a former military base. Nearby attractions are the ruins of the old church at Balnakeil (1619), the beautiful sands of Balnakeil Bay and Faraid Head - a favourite haunt of puffins.

 

Smoo Cave - 55 minute drive

The north coast, Smoo cave and Durness are all within easy reach of Kylesku Lodges. The cave is a spectacular limestone cavern. A wooden walkway enables visitors to view the waterfalls in the inner chamber - which can also be explored by boat. Between May and July Smoo Cave is also a good place for a close-up view of nesting Fulmars.

                              Hydroponicum Garden - 1 hour drive

This unique indoor garden at Achiltibuie demonstrates the growing of all types of plants by the pioneering system of hydroponics (No soil is required!). Delicious food, including produce from the hydroponicum can be sampled in the relaxing atmosphere of the Lilypond cafe, with its floral landscaped pond.

Achiltibuie Smokehouse - 1 hour drive

The Achiltibuie Smokehouse is renowned for its smoked salmon, Kippers and smoked meat. From the viewing windows, visitors can see some of the production, smoking and slicing activities. The smokehouse is 5 miles west of Achiltibuie.

Corrieshalloch Gorge - 1 hour drive

This mile-long spectacular gorge climaxes in the falls of Measach and can be viewed from a springy suspension bridge. The gorge is 10 miles south of Ullapool on the Poolewe Road.  Places to visit on route are Ullapool, Leckmelm Forrest with its beautiful trees and forest walks and Leckmelm Garden, pictured right, a beautiful Forrest Garden on the shores of Loch Broom.

Dunrobin Castle and Gardens - 75 minute drive

The castle is an hour and a half drive from Kylesku over scenic roads . Falls of Shin can be visited on route. The castle is the ancient seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. On view are furniture, paintings, family memorabilia, fire engine, museum, a falconry display and beautiful gardens. There is also a tea room and gift shop. Open 1st April to 15th October.

Inverewe Gardens - 2 hour drive through stunning scenery

North of Poolewe, the gardens boast 50 acres of exotic woodlands. They are owned by the National Trust for Scotland and are worth a visit at any time of year. There are guided walks, an excellent restaurant and a gift shop. The drive from Newton Lodge passes through stunning scenery. Make a day trip and visit

Kylesku Lodges lies within easy reach of three coastlines - west , north and east. All boast beautiful sandy beaches and each has its own special character.

Highland Games

Highland Gatherings are held throughout the summer months. Visitors can enter the various competitive events.
